the SLOB - The world's best slower ball

Many people have been asking all about The SLOB and how to bowl it. So here it is!

The SLOB name is taken from the first two letters of the first two words describing the ball bowled, Slower Obsolete Delivery. It’s been called this because it appears to be a rather innocuous delivery in flight.

However this is where it gets interesting! If you release this ball correctly, it looks like the ball is going head height, yet this release is extremely deceptive. And if you manage to perfect it, the ball can drop like a stone into the block hole.

But here’s the best part (and the reason it’s been dubbed The World’s Best Slower Ball). The ball grip appears to the batsman like a perfectly normal delivery. The problem with many slower balls is they are obvious before you let them go. This is where the SLOB has a massive advantage. You show a regulation grip to the batsman and the deception starts to happen. In fact, you are actually only gripping the ball with your index and middle fingers – nothing else.

Figure 1The remaining fingers and thumb are then placed on the ball to superficially appear as if you are holding the ball normally (figure 1).

If you have the correct pressure grip from the two fingers holding the ball, you should be able to hold your hand above the ball without losing grip on it (figure 2).

Figure 2This is the set up for the SLOB. Now you have to release it properly.

When you get to releasing the ball, you simply open your hand on release as if you are giving a ‘high five’ to the batsman (figure 3).It’s important to open your hand fully as you release and all the fingers and thumb come off at the same time. The trajectory looks exactly like a beamer and the batsman ‘sees’ a very high delivery aimed at his head. Amazingly the ballstarts to drop on the journey and if you have been able to get it right, the final three to four metres will see the ball ‘dying’ into a Yorker length.

Figure 3All that’s left is for you to go out and try this in the nets yourself. Remember to try to bowl the ball halfway up the back net behind the batsman on the full. This will be the sensation when you let it go. Its best to practise without a batsman first! But please have some fun with this delivery and try it.

I can guarantee you this – if you get it right, no batsman will spot it in flight, in your grip or out of your hand. Welcome to The World’s Best Slower Ball. Here is some useful information to have you bowling faster & straighter – quickly:

• Imagine you are bowling in a railway track. This will help you run-up straight, keep your weight moving in a straight line in your action and follow-through straight. If it doesn’t go at the batsman, then change it!

• Your non-bowling arm is far more important than your bowling arm. Use it properly by driving it out and down so it passes your side. When you do this properly, it will accelerate your bowling shoulder and help increase speed

• Keep your elbows and arms pumping in as you run up and load up into your action. Nothing throws your momentum and straight lines off like unnecessary side-to-side movements. Keeping your action ‘tight’ helps you to control the release of the ball

• Make sure you fully rotate your shoulders on completion of action. If you have a name on your back imagine you are going to show it to the batsman when you finish. This will help you think about how much of a shoulder turn you’re aiming for

• Try to drive your chest through the crease just before you let the ball go. The sensation is that of being pulled forward by the batsman with a big rope attached to your chest. This gets you ‘as far in front of the ball’ as possible and increases arm pull and speed of the arm

• At the point of delivery, your hips and nose will be facing the batsman. If your bowling hip is ‘lazy’ it will lag behind thus dropping your speed. If your nose isn’t facing the batsman, your head is probably falling away. The hips are the powerhouse of your body. Get them in the right position

• Try not to throw your non-bowling arm too high as it gets you off balance and affects your timing. Remember, you’re trying to go forwards, not up and down

• Your bowling arm starts to bowl from the downswing, which is close to your bowling side hip. Getting your bowling hand into this position quickly from your load-up helps you improve your speed and timing.
